That was some brutally steep post holing , but finally back on the trail. That was a bad idea and cost me a lot of energy. Finally seeing some nice views.

Looking at the map, you’ll see I’m off route. Decided to climb up a 55 degree slope to save time. Been fighting up deep snow whole way. No more shortcuts.

Taking a break at Williams Lake which of course is frozen. Calm here & I could fly drone, but think I’ll save battery power for higher up, my 4 packs =1 hour
It’s just below freezing and calm. Surprised to
see snow down this
low. Brought extra layers in case I get nailed down by a storm. Leaving the trailhead now
It’s sunset & I’m sitting on a rock at Taum Sauk Mountain, the highest point in Missouri smoking a Cuban cigar & eating a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup .
Life is deliciously good.
Now standing on the 3,213′ Pennsylvania Highpoint, Mt Davis summit tower. There is unlimited visibility, mild winds, wispy clouds & bright colors as far as the eye can see.
Drove though Amish country getting here.
Standing atop 3,360′ Backbone Mountain, the highpoint of Maryland. Took Jeep almost to the top and it was a wild ride over logs, boulders and gullies.
I was grinning all the way to the summit!
Standing on the 5,863′ Summit of Spruce Knob, highest point in West Virginia. Dense fog, so low visibility.
Cool w no wind, quiet & serene here. 1st HP of trip
Just completed Mt Sunflower Kansas. Surrounded by cultivated farm land as far as the eye can see.
Checked out a book I was while there. Really, there’s a library.
I now proudly stand on the barely perceptible rise that is the highest point in Nebraska.
It’s located in a vast plain that is also home to a herd of buffalo who haven’t noticed me.
Just delivered kids back to trailhead where search and rescue was staging from. Everyone was very relieved and they gave us the key to the city.
We found the kids walking along the road and are taking them back up the mountain.
Back at the trailhead. Was large group of kids leaving the summit as we came up & 3 are lost. Offered to help, but rangers declined.
Standing on the 7,242′ summit of Harney Peak SD. It is overcast, cold and freakishly windy. Despite that the scenery is breathtaking.
Beautiful terrain w unique rock formations. Temp is 48F w strong winds. Feels like rain is coming. Missed summit trail, doubling back now. Next stop summit.
Rick and I decided to start Harney Peak a bit later so we could enjoy the scenery going up. Should be midway up mountain at sunrise. Leaving trailhead now.
Back at trailhead & my waiting Jeep.
It was a nice hike & more beautiful than expected. The rainstorm sunrise was perfect & coyotes were a pleasant surprise.
Still dark & I’m following what appears to be a cow path. I can’t imagine what interest bovine would have in state highpoints, but its heading in the right direction.
